PriceMyTrip.co Every trip, priced.

Sri Lanka: $14/day on the ground. $1,200 to get there.

You've seen the "$30 a day" claims. They're true, and they're the smaller number. Here's the full hill-country day, priced tier by tier, plus the flight that makes up 86% of a two-week trip and the visa that's actually free if you're American. Verified July 2026, ~336 LKR to the dollar.

Same hill country, three ways to sleep. Press a key and the receipt reprints. The flight below doesn't change no matter which tier you pick: that's the whole point of this page.

Official Central Cultural Fund pricing · verified July 2026

Sri Lanka charges foreigners and residents differently at cultural sites, officially, not as a scam. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is the clearest example: the Central Cultural Fund's own pricing page lists it at $35 for a non-SAARC visitor and 112.70 LKR, about 34 cents, for a Sri Lankan. Same rock, same queue, a 99x gap. It's the single biggest sightseeing line in a hill-country day, and it's worth budgeting for on purpose rather than being surprised by it at the gate.

Foreign visitor, non-SAARC $35.00
Sri Lankan resident $0.34
The foreigner premium $34.66

14 days, flight included · verified July 2026

A hill-country day is genuinely cheap. The flight to reach it is not. Round trip from New York, economy, checked against a bookable named fare and two independent aggregator ranges in July 2026: no nonstop route exists, so budget one or two stops (commonly via Doha, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi) and 19-20 hours total.

Flight, round trip, economy bookable fare $1,156-1,248 across sources; receipt uses the honest middle $1,200.00
Visa (ETA), US citizen genuinely free since 25 May 2026; most nationalities pay $50 $0.00
14 days on the ground at the $14 day the receipt above ×14 $196.00
Total, flight included $1,396.00

Read that again: the plane ticket costs six times the entire two weeks on the ground. That's the honest number, and it doesn't make Sri Lanka a bad value, it just means the flight, not the dorm bed, is where a real budget decision gets made.

  • The visa really is free. As of 25 May 2026, US passport holders are one of 40 nationalities that pay nothing for the 30-day tourist ETA, confirmed directly on the official government portal. You still have to apply online before you fly: it's a free visa, not visa-free entry.
  • Flying the Standard or Comfort tier instead? 14 days at Standard ($28/day) is $392; add the flight and visa for $1,592. At Comfort ($54/day) it's $756 on the ground, $1,956 with the flight.

Fares drift daily and this route has new capacity landing in August 2026 on connecting hubs. Checked against Kayak, Momondo, and SriLankan Airlines' own booking page in late July 2026; re-verified whenever it appears in a video.

Where this budget breaks
  • The famous train doesn't reach Kandy right now. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the upcountry rail line in November 2025, and the government's own restoration target is the end of 2026. The scenic Nanu Oya-to-Ella stretch through the Nine Arch Bridge does run, about four times a day, but you drive to it first.
  • Free things stopped being free. Ella Rock now charges roughly 900 LKR at a hut near the summit, and Pidurangala Rock doubled to 1,000 LKR. Plenty of current guides still say both are free.
  • Cash country. Tuk-tuks, local eateries, and small guesthouses take rupees only. ATMs at Bank of Ceylon and People's Bank are free; some other banks charge a fee per withdrawal.

Insurance: the line a $14/day trip skips

A scooter spill in the hill country or a missed connection on a long haul from New York costs more than a week of this budget. SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance is built for long, multi-week budget trips like this one: from around $1.50/day, sign up before or during the trip, cancel anytime.
